Guys, just to train ourselves...here is my rather long education through compilation of Qs....some r easy...some r tough!!! The idea is not to tire u out...but to help people who have not read or are facing problems, cope. I believe this is the best form of discussion. Hope these Qs r close to the S1 format. Since the list is rather long...I advice you to write the answers on paper and then upload (saves time). Q1. Which ego def. mech. is the grandfather of all ego defenses? DENIAL Q2. A man with questions about his sexuality acts by becoming overly macho -which defense mechanism is he using? REACTION FORMATION Q3. Channelling your aggressive impulses toward a career as a boxer; becoming a surgeon because of your desire to cut; lifting weights to release 'pent up' energy- which ego def mech. is this? SUBLIMATION Q4. Freud found which ego def. mech. as the "sole" healthy one (or) Which is considered by some to be the most mature defense mechanism? a) humor; b)sublimation; c)intellectualization; d)altruism; e)asceticism SUBLIMATION Q5. Which could be considered the "absolute ultimate" in defense mechanisms? a)altruism; b)asceticism ; c)suppression; d)sublimation Sublimation is correct accordiing to kaplan. ,but asceticism takes it to a higher level not neccesarily practiced in US Q6. When Yoko Ono was first informed that her husband John Lennon was dead, she refused to believe it was true, and accused the doctor of being a part of some conspiracy. And this happened even with Ono having been present when Lennon was shot. DENIAL Q7. If we feel guilty, we begin to see others as accusing us of crimes. Which ego def. mech. is this? PROJECTION Q8. "The white person with repressed sexual urges may believe that all blacks are preoccupied with sex" (or) When losing an argument, you state "You're just Stupid;" homophobia (or) The most beautiful human interaction of all - empathy, involve which ego def. mech.? PROJECTION Q9. Elie Wiesel's "Night" is a work dealing with his experiences in a concentration camp. While young, Elie watched his father being beaten by Nazis. Elie felt anger towards his father's inability to follow their orders, and imagined that he deserved being beaten. As he did this, he felt his fear melt away - a rather adaptive use of identifying with the aggressor, at least in the short term. Which ego def. mech. is this? INTROJECTION Q10.George Bush displays in his childish search for "evil doers" in the world, and his insistence that others are "either with him or against him" rather than seeing that each side in every conflict - which ego def. mech. is this? SPLITTING Q11. Which ego def. mech. explains the multiple personality disorder that appears to always form in case of abuse - the child puts "someone else" there to be abused, and this someone else carries on his or her own personality, so that the core personality does not have to share the painful memories? DISSOCIATION Q12. "Suppose you were listening to a friend describe going through his parents' divorce. He may tell about deeply hurtful situations but show no sadness or anger; he gives a superficial behavioral description of what happened; he might even clinically "analyze" his parents' underlying motives without showing his own emotions" (or) "People may discuss war without vividly feeling the misery of many people dying" (or) Using which ego def. mech. do surgeons, generals, and any others who have to do a "messy" job find it easier to separate out emotions from cognitions? ISOLATION Q13. This defense is the theme of Aesop's "Fox and the Grapes" and also "stating that you were fired because you didn't kiss up the boss, when the real reason was your poor performance" (or) "failing the MLE was a blessing in disguise, now I know I want to become a counselor--maybe a social worker--and not a Doctor" ? RATIONALISATIONQ14. The "Jesus" syndrome, wherein a person sacrifices their needs to another, with the hope of obtaining Adler's secondary gains - indirect pleasure, such as others feeling gratitude or sorrow for the person. Which ego def. mech. is this? ALTRUISM Q15. A client who repeatedly shows up late for sessions and forgets to bring in his checkbook. Which ego def. mech. is this? ACTING OUT Q16. The frustrated worker, who can't yell at the boss but comes home and yells at the spouse, who yells at the children, who kick the dog, i.e. takes it out on the people to be loved (or) Slamming a door instead of hitting at person...Which ego def. mech. is this? DISPLACEMENT Q17. Sitting in a corner and crying after hearing bad news; throwing a temper tantrum when you don't get your way...Which ego def. mech. is this? REGRESSION Q18.Some Jews helped Hitler, some women want their husbands to be dominant and feel superior to them and other women. In other cases, a person may associate with and emulate an admired person or group to reduce anxiety. High school cliques serve this purpose. A new college freshman may feel tense and alone and out of place; she notices that most other students are "a little dressed up," not sloppy shirt and jeans. Her roommates insist on studying from 7:00 to 10:00 every night except Friday and Saturday; they are more serious than her old friends and their conversations reflect these differences. They commented about her "country" accent and the fact that she didn't watch the news. She started dressing up occasionally, watched the news, got more interested in politics, and studied a lot more than ever before. When she went home at Christmas, her friends told her she had changed and dad commented that he was losing his little girl. IDENTIFICATION Q19.Sometimes dreams or slips of the tongue or attempts at humor reveal our unconscious motives. For example, if a teacher ridiculed you in class, you might dream he/she had a horrible auto accident. Or, trying hard to say something nice to the teacher a few days later, you comment after class, "each of your lectures seems better than the next." Or, if you were unfortunate enough to be asked to introduce your former teacher at a symposium and said, "I'd like to prevent--huh--I mean present Dr.___," some might guess the truth. Which is this one? REPRESSION Q20.Sometimes we work on improving in the area we are weak in, so the skinny, shy child becomes Miss or Mr.America or the kid with speech problems becomes a politician (like Demosthenes with rocks in his mouth or Winston Churchill). Sometimes we find other areas to make up for our weaknesses; the unattractive student becomes an outstanding scholar, the average student becomes an outstanding athlete, the person in an unsatisfying marriage becomes deeply involved with the children.Which one? SUBSTITUTION That's it guys...I am tired...hope this was helpful...now ur fit to take on ego defenses in MLE if u ace the above. Best o' luck!! p.s: I HAVE REDUCED THE FONT AND INCLUDED ANSWERS
