Can someone describe this, and I would appreciate a reference that discusses various methods of specimen collection for microbiology (ex. endotracheal tube aspirate, etc.).

http://microbiology.mtsinai.on.ca/manual/viro/vir... According to this website an auger suction is the same as an endotracheal aspirate. I've never heard an ET aspirate called that in 29 years of micro....!

General specimen collection - I found these sites. This is pretty typical of micro lab requirements. http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/Path_Handbook/Appen... http://www.legacyhealth.org/healthcare/labservice... Please be aware that there are certain tests that cannot be done if the specimen is incorrectly collected. Always check with your micro lab at whatever hospital you are in if you are unsure of their requirements. One phone call will save a LOT of hassle later.
