:? Hi, I'm a Japanese MD with Green Card and am currently studying for the USMLE exams. I worked briefly as a psychiatrist in Japan and have over 2 years neuroscience research in the US. I really want to be a psychiatrist in America, but I'm not sure what all the issues are. I have a few questions: 1) For IMGs, what is the most important factor in getting a psychiatry residency position? I've been told that it's more important to have US connections (e.g. references, clerkship experience) than it is to have good test scores. I even heard of an IMG who had excellent (90+) test scores but didn't get a residency position. Does this kind of stuff happen? If not, what should I worry most about? 2) How possible is it to get a clerkship or observership at a psychiatric hospital/clinic? Any ideas on how to apply? 3) Any other advice for an aspiring US psychiatrist would be great. Thanks!
