Some more interesting Qs....found ellsewhere...

1. A middle aged man has gonorrhoea. Should you inform his wife about this? If his wife asks you what is wrong with her husband, what would you tell?

2. A 16 year old male is in a military training camp (but not in the regular military). Is he emancipated?

3. A patient is drunk and is not completely aware of his surroundings. If he needs an emergency medical procedure to save his life, but he refuses treatment, what would you do?

4. If the same drunk person needs non-emergency medical treatment, and he refuses, what would you do ?

1- You can't if he doesn't want his wife to be informed. If it's a lethal situation (AIDS instead of gonorrhea), ask for legal advice. If wife asks, tell her to ask him.

2- No.

3- Proceed with treatment: save his life. Drunk people can't make decisions.

4- Not sure.... Tell him to come by later when he's sober? He might not even remember. If possible keep him around until he's sober, then ask him again...

its not just life threatening cases where u inform someone who can be harmed by the patient.....an STD patient who is not informing his wife wud cause harm to her and i think the wife shud be informed even if he doesnt want her to be. wht say u?

OH Yeah MAN, Gonnorrhea......This woman will catch it, She can get Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, become Infertile and NEVER HAVE KIDS AGAIN, or get a LIFE THREATENING Ectopic pregnancy. You are most definitely supposed to TELL HER!!!!

  #6

i think this question is a little easier for the mandatory reportables like G.N. because you're going to tell the health authorities anyway, and they're going to tell her anyway.

for other diseases, confidentiality i think still prevails unless there is immediate danger. i get what nsh is saying, but i think the kind of immediate danger they're generally testing is tarasoff danger...not convinced on pid. i bet any question along those lines would include a choice to strongly attempt to persuade the husband to communicate, or to let you communicate, the info.

  #7

yes, you are generally NOT to tell Anything to any relative. But I know that you have actually call up the spouse and send them to a gyno right away in the case of Gonnorrhea. , don't even wait for the spouse to ask you

about 3rd question, ,one will have to get a court order i think, rite?

no, you don't need a court order to treat a drunk individual whose life is in emergent risk. it definitely falls under the category of exceptions to informed consent.

nsh or anyone else who knows of a reference for the informing responsibility for gn i'd be interested in seeing it.
