What is counseling the patient? I really don't understand what it is. Anybody can help and give examples? Thanks alot

counseling means a kind of professional advice , for example if the patient is smoking you have to counsel him and tell him that smoking is not good for you and it will cause you a lot of health hazards and then offer him to join the special program provided by the hospital .this also goes with drinkig alcohols or using drugs .

Is couselling neccesary for all cases you have on exam. I can understand if we cousel abt amoking, alcohol, sexual habits. but how are we going to counsel for abdominal pain, fever, some other complains?

You only counsel for smoking, alcohol, sexual habit, diabetes control, diet... in another words counsel them im things that is in the patients control.

Pain, fever and other complaints might be due to their lifestyle (smoking, alcohol, sexual habits etc) You dont counsel on their complaints but instead you educated them.

Remember to counsel right on spot!!! dont wait til the end!!

Hope this helps!
Good luck!!

Can Some body Put an example here for Counsellation ??? Like e.g if its for Hep B and C??? what are those specific questions we should ask!!! and hat are the favourites for Step2 CS in regard of Counsellation??

answering the challenging questions when appropriate, and being able to speak to the patient when counseling is necessary, the SP will give you about 1-3 chances to counsel per case

If a patient has Hep B you should stress the sexual history and ask if there was any unprotected sex, under the social history you can ask the patient if they used any Injection drugs like heroin
For Hep C you can also look very carefully on the SP for any tatoos, cuts bruises, also examine the Abdomen check the right upper quadrant very carefully check Murphys sign as well
the answers to challenging questions must sound best coming out of your mouth so there is variation from person to person...as long as it is clear and answers their question it is fine
