Hi, bbb I am an IMG. I passed both Step1 and Step2Ck. I did Step2 CS on Aug.6. Could I start the application now or wait until I got ECFMG certificate? Thanks. Schristina

Hello bbb, I would like to know more about these fellowship programs.... I understand that if one is planning to apply for a fellowship he/she should go for a J1 visa from the start, because as far as I understood they won't sponsor H1. is that right? does this mean that when u finish your residency u don't have to worry about changing the visa (or renewing it or going back home for 2 years) once u get into a fellowship progr? is it extending thru the other 3 years of fellowship? what if u already are on an H1 visa --- can not do fellowship? also, how difficult is it for an IMG to get into a cardiology fellowship? is it another "restricted area" for AMGs also, like surgery, dermatology, etc? I know those r not impossible to get even for IMGs, as everybody says, but we all know that they make it very difficult (scores, green card, research). I know u already said that it depends on how good u are during your residency......I can figure what that means....but is this really all? Many many thanks for all that you do for us on this forum!!! I truely hope you will always be here with us, guiding and clearing out doubts. I personally feel safer knowing you're here!! All the best to you and your loved ones! Alina

From what I understand, the majority of fellowship programs through the country would prefer people on J-1 visas or Green card, or citizen. does this mean that when u finish your residency u don't have to worry about changing the visa (or renewing it or going back home for 2 years) once u get into a fellowship progr? is it extending thru the other 3 years of fellowship? what if u already are on an H1 visa --- can not do fellowship? If you do your residency on a J visa, then most fellowships will continue to sponsor your visa through ECFMG. If you are on an H1 visa, you need to find a program that will sponsor it, or transfer to a J visa.
how difficult is it for an IMG to get into a cardiology fellowship? I won't say it's easy, but it's certainly not impossible. I know many IMG's who are in cardiology residency programs..... Good luck
