Since memory loss is the main component in dementia I became a little curious. According to UW remote memory is spared in dementia. But according to Kaplan and Sadock's pocket handbook, 2005, page 48, both recent and remote memory is impaired in dementia, but in delirium only recent memory is impaired. Neurology Blueprint, page 84: "in general most patients with dementia start having problems with short term memory".
My explanation is that both of them can be true and maybe in early stages only short-term memory is impaired and in severe cases both memories are impaired. Am I correct? How to use the information on the USMLE?
