is there any differenc between atypical pneumonia and walking pneumonia

  #2

Atypical is the one where inflamation is mostly in parenchema of the lung, rather than in airways, so the pt may not have much mucus and only moderate cough, so it makes it easier for such pt ro "walk" around with it with out seeking med attention, hence walking pneumonia. However, any pneumonia can be walking, if the pt does not appera to have much simptoms.

"Walking pneumonia” is used to denote most cases where the disease is not severe enough to confine the patient to bed or to require hospitalization.

Atypical or walking are same. They are caused by less common micro-organisms, such as Mycoplasma.

I am not very sure abt the parenchyma stuff in relation to mdwannabe's comment. Check this out.

My understanding of atypical pneumonia is that it doesn't has respiratory symptoms as its primary symptoms...eg.chlamydia and legionella........I'm not sure if its equivalent to walking pneumonia because whenever I read micro. they only associate the word walking pneumonia with mycoplasma.....why is that?

agree with malaysian, walking pneumonia is term associated with atypical pneumonia caused by mycoplasma
The pneumonia is called “walking pneumonia” because in most cases the disease is not severe enough to confine the patient to bed or to warrant hospitalization
though the CXR gives much severe picture as compared to pt's Sx

I think that viral pneumonia is also often considered atypical and frequently walking.
