I would like some help here please. I wondered if ''bbb'' is able to make any comments here. I qualified in India (1995). Did my postgraduate degree (MRCP) and higher specialist training in Gastroenterology in UK - 3+5 years. I have plans to move to US for more training in GI and have started flicking through MLE books. I have a feeling that I will have to do residency and then fellowship in GI after -but answers to some questions would help: 1. How difficult is it for someone like me qualified so many years ago  to get a residency/fellowship in GI? 2. Is GI fellowship very difficult/competitive specialty to get into 8-[ ? 3. Is it possible to get into Fellowship straight after USMLE? To everyone out there, thanks very much and take care.

1. How difficult is it for someone like me qualified so many years ago to get a residency/fellowship in GI? We have taken persons into residency recently who graduated in 1995 - you have to to get good USMLE scores, interview well, etc. 2. Is GI fellowship very difficult/competitive specialty to get into? Yes, most of the fellowships are competitive: Cardiology, Pulmonary, Nephrology, GI - but this doesn't mean impossible. 3. Is it possible to get into Fellowship straight after USMLE? There are programs which will accept persons directly in a fellowship, but you will not be able to become board certified with the ABIM, because they require a US residency. I know that some physicians in the past have been accepted into a US fellowship, and then tried to get into an IM residency and have had difficulty with this. Good luck
