you can do research at any university, but that is usualy full time. Otherwise some people work for Kaplan while taking their courses and others do something totally different. I knew several docs from the middle east who delivered pizza part time while taking Kaplan.

Usually for research positions, you can get sponsored for a visa. It varies from school to school, but they are much more liberal about research poistions (post docs and technicians) than they are for residencies. The pizza delivery job and other restaurant/service jobs can be done without a visa. But as that is technically illegal, the pay will be less than minimum wage. But if you just want part time work while you study, it will put some cash in your pockets.

I work part time as medical assistant helps pay for my exams and more than enough time to study. my boss is very supportive and allows me to take time off anytime i want when i need it for studying - i do have work permit and i am now a permanent resident here in the US.
