I have a situation regarding "re-application after eligibility period extended once" and "don't want have a fail in the record", please help:

I just extended my eligibility period recently (from Feb-Apr period to the May-July period of 2003) and I am still not ready for the Step1 (I am 100% sure I will fail if I take it in July). My question is following:

If I skip it in July (i.e. I do not take it in July and re-apply for a future date e.g. Oct-Dec), will this "skipping" count as a "fail" in my records even without my actually taking the exam ? What this skipping will show in my records ? does it even show in the records ?

Is there an option that allows me to actually go and take(try) the exam ( say try a few blocks) and then cancel it, so that it won't count as a "fail once on step1" ?

Is there such a thing as to "cancel" it at all ? even before taking the exam ?

anxiously need advice,

Thank you (my email: xjj909@yahoo.com)

From the program point, it doesn't show as a fail - under pass/fail it says "not Applicable", no scores show up, it's all zeros, and under comments it says "incomplete" - when the PD and I see that, we know that it means that someone scheduled and didn't complete the test. Under the explainations page, incomplete mean "application sat for some, but not all, of the scheduled examination. No score reported."

Not taking it won't count as a fail on your score report. Since it's not mentioned in the explainations page, it doesn't appear to be reported.

We have interviewed persons with this on their score report, who then took the exam and passed.

Ok, so if I don't take it in my assigned eligibilty period then a fail doesn't show up on my record, right? So, nothing shows up on my record? It'd be like I never applied for it? What if I don't extend the eligibility period and just reapply to take it again. Do I have to try to extend first? and if I do reapply, would the nbme have problems with accepting a reapplication knowing that I didn't take it or that I didn't extend? thanks for any help you can give me.

That's something that happens beyond what I can see as a program coordinator. Check with the NBME or USMLE and see what they say.

Good luck
