agoraphobia is fear of situations that may be difficult t escapeeg public gatherings even malls, buses etc. panic attacks can be with/without agoraphobia. the patient complains of palpitations, sweating, feeling of impending doom, may describe it as having a heart attack! or about to die. lasts about 10 min, occur " out of the blue". more common in females. treatment SSRI, alprax(only BZD that is used), systematic desensitization.

One strange thing about Agoraphobia is that even though the majority of the patients with panic disorder have it along with agoraphobia, the Psychiatric outpatient clinics show the reverse trend [i.e it shows patients having panic disorder without agorphobia outnumberin the other group] .Thats because the ones with Agoraphobia do not report to docs [for fear of being in situations where escape is impossible.... ]. Another nice thing , a difference bw social phobia and agoraphobia is that the latter is more incapacitating in that a patient with social phobia can attend a function with a close friend or confidante ...but no so in the case of Agoraphobia..
