HI ppl .....how r u.....u guys r doing a gr8 job by helping so many students....
actually i m an undergraduate medical student......a lot of ppl in my
country give usmle step 1 after graduation....but i wanna do it before that...my current situation is that i have completed 3 yrs of my medical studies....i have studied following subjects in my course
1....anatomy
2...physiology
3...biochemistry
4....pharma
i will study pathology and micro in my 4th yr during which i intend to prepare for step1 so i will do them from some review books....
now my plan is
0ct15-march15(5 months)....i will study for 3-4 hrs a day with sundays off....i will do my first reading during this period ...i have decided to use kaplan books for all subjects except patho....for which i will use...only pathology rapid review....by goljan(no kaplan )...i will also use h-y neuro for anatomy in addition to kaplan anatomy....every night before sleeping i will listen to goljan audio for abt half hr-45 min...so in a span of 5 months i will be able to complete goljan audio twice...for march 15-first april i will do first aid twice in abt 3-4 hrs /day...excluding sundays
from 1st april-ist july...mcqs time....again 3-4 hrs per day excluding sundays....i will do 100qs per day......and write down my mistakes in a diary to revise at the end.....i will do following sources...
kaplan q-book......800qs
kaplan q review ....3500qs
n.m.s ..............around a1000qs
robbin review for pathp....1000qs
princeton online review of questions......2000qs
total................around 8000+qs
in last 15 days of this period.......i will revise all my mistakes that i wrote in register plus kaplan q review again completely ....also before sleeping i will again listen to goljan and try to listen him again 2 times...
JULY1 TO JULY 20....DURING THIS PERIOD I WILL STUDY FOR 5-6 HRS per day......excluding sundays.....i will do second revision of kaplan books and goljan rapid review of pathiology...of mossby series....(no kaplan for patho)
JULY 21-AUGUST 10....i will do following stuff in 5-6 hrs per day
goljan audio........40hrs
first aid...........25 hrs....(once completely)
high yield neuro ...10 hrs
kaplan cd exam
nbme 2 exams
usmle cd
blackwell exam.....
plus revise my mistakes of qs written in a register....
AUGUST 11-28 .....10-12 hrs per day..excluding sundays....
revise kaplan notes for all subjects except patho...for which once again only goljan rapid review series patho(no kaplan)...
on second last day before test i will revise all my mistakes that i wrote in a register of qs......plus will go thru last chap in first aid of buzz words........on last day i wil simply rest....give my test in last week of august or first week of september
so just to summarize i will study
kaplan notes (except patho) and for patho goljan rapid review series...3 TIMES
first aid ......3 times
goljan audio....5 times..
mcqs....abt 9000 plus ....with 3-4 revisions of all my mistakes....
8 months of 3-4 hrs study(except sundays)
2 months of 7-8 hrs study(except sundays)
MY AIM is 250+.......can i do it with this schedule.....
need your suggestions......plz help......suggest any alterations if u feel they r really important.....thank u....and good luck to all of u..bye

Well, if you can keep to your schedule you will be fine. I can't comment on the Packistan educational system, but from an Indian perspective it is tough to study well for your med school exams and at the same time study for the USMLE. If you are disciplined enough, I don't see why you couldn't do it. It will be tough. Just make sure you don't neglect your course work. The USMLE is no where near as tough as the Indian exams are. Don't know about Packistan.

thank u so much retroviridae.....really your words of encouragement mean so much to me......well in pakistan medical education is the hardest thing to
do.....just like india........but 1st 2nd and 5th yr r the toughest.......3rd and 4th yr r relatively easy....coz there is less burden....and normally students can afford to enjoy in 3rd and 4th yr....unlike 1st,2nd and 5th yr......and if u can do
step 1 in 4th yr.....it is a gr8 advantage...even in your school exams.....coz the proffessors consider u a
genius.....some of my seniors did it.....i have read your experience...and u did 4 readings of kaplan notes.....whereas i m going to do only 3 .....so can i still do it...or should i extract some more time for a 4th reading.....and dont worry abt my school exams.......i know i can do this step 1 stuff...so i have planned everthing abt abt my school exams as well...

Well, the more times you read the notes, the better you will do, but honestly, I think three times is enough. You would have just studied most of these subjects, and you would be doing patho at the time (patho is the most heavily emphasized subject). You should be fine. Use the NBME test close to the end to see how you are doing. By the end of your studies, if you want to read Kaplan notes one more time, you would only need to postpone your test by a week or so. I read the last time because I was scared I would fail. If I had only known about the NBME test to give me confidence in my score, I probably would have taken the test a week or two before I did.

dear desperate, im cent percent sure u'll do it 250+.first thing for this exaxm is motivatoin...u have enough. 2nd,strategy...urs seems perfect . 3rd,dedication...which looks like ur dedicated to ur cause as u r already showing it. keep going and u'll be successful.by the way r u from AKU or KEMC?wish u & everyone whos working hard--best of luck :!:

Are you sure its humanly possible to follow the schedule you mentioned above??All the best.....I have not given the exam and so my advice would be useless for the time being.

ya malaysian surely.....it is possible......and atleast here in pakistan...students really work more than
that.....and this schedule is just a bottom line....i will definitely work more than that.....
