Broadway Joe is very attached ot his daughters, but he just had a divorce and the daughters want to leave him to live with his x wife on the other side of the country. Now the daughters departure is one of the most devastating events in Joes life. Now he cant sleep. He wakes up at night with shortness of breath and chest pain directly after these events .

hey, can u elaborate a little more? i learned from BRS that conversion disorder is characterized by doctor shopping and la bella indifference. so whats ur criteria for making this diagnosis here? i picked pain disorder as answer knowing it might be wrong.

The reason i chose conversion was because these patients are not making up the symptoms, these symptoms really do occur, but they dont know why, and they usually follow some event, so that just rules out malingering and factitious, we know it can't be body dysmorphic, and pain disorder just didn't make sense to me, and so all the clues kinda lead to conversion. In kaplan, conversion is complaining of one or more symptoms which suggest a physical disorder, and the loss of functioning is real, not made up.
