what is it and how will it help build teh osmotic concentration gradient in renal medulla? this concept has been bothering me for a long time. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Ill give2 reasons:

1)Active transport of sodium ions (plus cotransport of K, Cl, and other ions)
out of the thick ascending loop of Henle to the interstitium

2)Smaller quantities of ions are transported into medullary interstitial fluid from the collectiong duct, mainly resulting from active transport of sodium
ions and electromagnetic passive absorption of chloride ions along with sodium ions.

* Theres much more-someone else can take it from here.
The above is for the countercurrent mechanism which is separate from the countercurrent multiplier!

ok...so u got Loop of Henle, that has limbs down and up. On the way down only water is sucked in to interstitium of the medula ff kiddney, due to osmotic pull from the Sodium that was exclusively absorbed in limb on the way up and Urea that moves in to medullary interstitium from Collecting ducts through chanells induced by ADH.
Hope this helps.

Good mdwannabe--Are you also good with the countercurrent multiplier?

thank u mjl1717 and mdwannbe, for answering my Q. so there is sth more than i expected  could u also tell me a bit bout the 'countercurrent multiplier' too? is it high yield in the Step?

  #7

its not high yield...but u should know about it
