what does "anion gap" tell us?
Why it elevates only in some metobolic acidosis?

Is "blood anion gap" and "urine anion gap" the same thing?

thanks a lot.

Anion Gap measures "other" unmeasured anions in the serum ( not Cl or
HCO3)
**Anions like lactate, B-OH butyrate, formate would be increased.
It should normally be between 10 - 16 mEq/ L
Its increased in lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis, chronic renal failure, ASA
intoxication or ethlene glycol intox., methanol intox.
Some use pneumonics like MUDPILES or KAUSMAUL but I try to remember the causes COLD- for this anyway.
Never heard of a urine anion gap maybe someone else has.
Hope this helps

Its OK -Stands for( acetyl) the easier one for me to spell-"ASPIRIN"
I like working with you cause we were very academic with that DKA
pathophysiology and that was a good unique learning experience for at least both of us.
Increased anion gap: lactic acidosis(types A and B), ketoacidosis which includes diabetic , alcohol and starvation ketoacidosis(3 forms)
Toxins -methanol , ethylene glycol and salicylates
acute and chronic renal failure
*After looking at it and from your q -one doesnt need a pneumonic
Just remember 3 things 1) both Acidosis 2)Toxins 3)Acute /Chronic renal failure. Santaclara Thx for bringing me to this realization and helping us put this info in an orderly fashion for quick retrieval!!
