HI, I have had an injury to my submandibular gland under my left jaw. After it was injured it became very swollen with swollen lymph nodes under my jaw, under my ear, and some in my neck all an the left side. The next day I woke up with swelling under my left jaw, my left cheek puffy and red, and fluid under my eyes with creases. I have had this problem for about six months and im scheduled to get the gland removed soon because its so plugged up and damaged. I found out the main duct ic constricted so saliva cant exit it into my mouth so its causing allot of infection inside of it. Its even abscessed from being infected so long. My doctor said im having a reaction to the bad infection causing histamines to be released into my bloodstream from the my body fighting off the constant war of bacteria, and that's why my cheek is swollen and red along with the swelling under my eyes. The only thing im really worried about is the swelling under my jaw not going away. Im pretty sure everything else will go back to normal but I heard a lymph node or two come out on this surgery. Im scared that the fluid under the left side of my jaw and chin from this infection wont drain when these nodes are removed. If you know anything about this complication, feel free to write. Its just that I used to have arealy firm jaw and under chin and this really affects my face shape. It looks like I have put on some wait under my chin. Im 17 so im really scared. Thanks so much, Emma

You are young I would think that as long as you are not prone to constant monthly or yearly infections that once the surgery is done with "Time" the swelling would decrease and the submandibular area will be at normal size.

Thanks for replying. No im not prone to infection I hardly ever even get a cold. My gland is only infected from the injury that damaged it causing the infection. im hoping the fluid will drain completly and not just decrease. Do you know if this has been a complication with people? Or the fluid will definetly not all drain out after the salivary gland is removed? Thanks so much for the help )

No-I havent heard of complicaions from this type of surgery. Also I would say (and I know its not easy) try to relax because both your immune system and your general system will function more efficiently! Also dont be afraid to communicate with the surgeon who does the operation. You may want to write a list of questions for him.

Thanks for your help. My mind likes to think of every bad thing possible and make me believe it. I start thinking, what if the fluid never drains and your face doesnt return to you. I geuss the fluid under my jaw freake me out so much because im a fairly skinny person and the fluid in my cheek and under my jaw makes me look like I have been putting on some pounds. But im going to think positive from now on. I mean if new lymphatic channels will grow and things will heal, why wouldnt the fluid eventualy drain. AT least I wont have an infection causing every lymph node on the left part my neck and jaw to be sore and swollen. I read when you have an infection especially a chronic one like mine it slows the lymph drainage down because thoses nodes are busy fighting the bacteria. Its funny because the little fluid role under my chin is to the left so I have a little pouch just on the left side. Its not allot of fluid just enough to notice it. Thanks for the help )
