in my opinion E coli and Salmonella too are encapsulated but i wasnt sure about the rest of them. In describing the generalities of enterobactereceae, MRS has described K antigen. so wanted to make sure whether it is present in all or only some of them. thanx mjl for ur response. i will welcome all furthur inputs and comments

As i know not all e.coli and salmonella are encapsulated in the same degree. Important is for example the K1 Stream in e.coli for meningitis in new borns. hope i remember that right.

Salmonella can possess a Vi (capsular) antigen that can interfere with typing. All suspected Salmonella are tested with polyvalent typing serum and the Vi typing serum. If both are positive, a heavy suspension of the organism in saline must be boiled for 15 minutes and then cooled. The capsule is destroyed and then the typing serum can work. I have seen mucoid E. coli, but Klebsiella is by far the most mucoid and slimiest bug.
