i thought this forum was useful so i'll contribute my experience. step 1: 232 kaplan qbank overall: 67% kaplan full length: 67% nbme 1 (1 month prior): 510 - about 221 nbme 4 (2 wks prior): 530 - about 224 free 150 usmle practice questions: 72% nbme 3 (1 wk prior): 610 - about 245 i thought nbme questions were much more relevant than qbank. according to qbank i was predicted at a low pass, but the nbme predicted significantly higher. nbme 3 must have been a fluke for me, it got my hopes up a little but i am still satisfied with my score. in retrospect my most useful resources were rapid review path and goljan, questions from robbins review of pathology, brs phys, and of course first aid. i thought kaplan was way too detailed and nitpicky, i.e. good for learning but not necessarily predictive, not sure if it is worth the $. would not have bought it had my school not forced us. i wish i had taken more time to do nbme form 2 and then go over every single question in all four forms of the nbme. maybe i would have done better. anyway, nbme's are the way to go. work hard and don't read too much into your qbank scores. good luck.

preparation for step 1: - started studying BRS books during M1 year along with my course syllabi - started reviewing BRS books a few months before taking the exam (e.g. reviewing physio over spring break, pharm on the weekends) - intensified my efforts over the last month and incorporated 1st aid and kaplan online tests to my study regimen, while still leaving time to relax at night and on weekends - pushed back my exam and had only 1 week of holiday post step 1, so i could attend weddings and birthdays prior to the exam without freaking out - reviewed only the bare basics of anatomy from 1st aid, except neuro and embryology which i studied in BRS and high yield, respectively (this strategy paid off for the board exam, but is kicking me in the butt now that i'm in my sugery rotation). % kaplan q-bank completed: ~75% avg % q-bank correct: ~73% board 1 score: 250/99 i think that board scores are in large part meaningless. many of my classmates who had considerably lower board scores than me are far brighter than i am when it comes to our clinical rotations. that being said, i'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. i guess my point is that if you scored poorly on the boards, don't take it as a sign of how smart you are/aren't. some people are just not good test-takers. and don't be scared by the scores that are being posted on this site. if they seem unusually high, that's because they are. people with high scores are more likely to post their scores than others. good luck to the next round of test takers. ~dulcy

Hi guys: Really happy with score, used the Step 1 Score Estimator and this forum to relieve anxiety while waiting for results, and as motivators during prep. Exam date: Mid-June 2006 Step 1 score: 95/235 Prep time: 6 months (5-6 hours per day, full time last 2 months) Sources: Micro made ridiculously simple and Pre-Test, Physio BRS and Pre-Test, Patho BRS, Anato Road Map, High Yield for Embryo, Behavior and Neuro, Biochem only Pre-Test (hate to read for this subject, so I only did questions), Kaplan lectures for Pharm, and of course FA 2005. BSS: ~60% (Don't reflect exam style, but nice teaching/recalling tool) Kaplan Q-Book: 74% Kaplan Simulated: 70% USMLE CD: 81% Keep yourself always motivated. Read material that is digestible to your taste, and use what other people recommend only as a guide for your selection. There isn't a perfect book. If you are an IMG like me, don't neglect Behavior some legal and ethical issues are very US specific. Do questions, do questions, and do questions!!! If you feel wear out... put on the brakes!!! Do something fun and then go on. Don't be your own enemy. Set a goal and never stop believing. You can do it, everything is possible!!! Good luck to you all!!!

I'm super excited that I can finally post on this thread! Step 1: 186/76 Kaplan qbank: 66%, 100% completed USMLE RX: 61%, 20% completed (found out about it to late) USMLE CD score: 42/36/36 NBME form 1: 410 NBME form 2: 400 I went down on my real score but I'm just happy that I'm over this hurdle! I posted my score for all those that aren't getting the 99. I used Kaplan materials, Golijan for pathology, and of course, First Aid. It's the best review book out there but you must know your basics before you read it, or else there's no way you can memorize it. Thanks to all on the forum, your posts helped me through a lot Best of luck to all and remember that you can do it!!!

i love this thread. it was motivating for me to see that guys get such good scores. esp the 99ers. it also helped me to predict my scores at the exam. i noticed that very few people were able to change their scores much (using NBME as predictor) within 2 weeks. i tried to break that 'rule' but i did not. kaplan qbank.............................64% (did 64%) NBME form 1, 2 weeks before......540/92 NBME form 2, night before..........540/92 real exam..................................231/94 good luck all.

STEP 1 SCORE : 92 / 228 exam date : 27th July TEst centre : ISLAMABAD , pakistan Q Book score : 272 / 350 (2 month b4 exam) Q bank score : 70-80 % avg (dint do the pharma bank) ECFMG CD : 41 38 39 (3 weeks b4 exam) KAPLAN SIMULATED : 76 % (11days b4 exam) i just studied kaplan n FA for the exam , n i think here s where i made a mistake. Coz in exam in every block i found some 12-17 questions totally unrelated to kaplan text i read or may be i failed to interpret. Exam took the hell out v me and i wasnt expecting more than 85 though i studied some 14 hrs a day for last 2 month STAT..i d advice u give special attention to respiratory n CVS. it looked to me tht every question is related to these 2 system in 1 way or other . on the whole am happy as i dint fall alot , Still a reasonably good score. Goodluck to all of you.

Read all subject 3 times, for pathology I did 5 times. Did qbank, Rapid review questions, Robbins Qbank cumulative score, random, timed: 69% Kaplan simulated exam: 72% (30 days before) NBME 2: 560 (45 days before)

I used first aid and created my own "list with things i need to know" where I wrote everything down I couldnt remember. In the end I mainly learned from my list and the annotations I wrote down into my first aid book. I didnt use any secondary literature and I dont think you need it. Just try to make as much questions as possible. And try to learn something from them, not only look if you did right or wrong. Good luck

227/92 I felt horrible when I came out of the room thinking I failed the test. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out about the score. I plan to go into IM so this score is reasonably good. Here are some of my stats: Kaplan Qbank 69% did all questions Kaplan Qbook ave 70s not really keep track the scores NBME1: 480 (214) 2 months prior NBME2: 490 (216) 1 month prior NBME3: 550 (230) 2 weeks prior

Exam date: 08/07 NBME 1: 620 (2 months before) NBME 3:620 (Month before test) NBME 4: 560 ( Taken late at night..but still found this the hardest) Kaplan Qbank: 73% overall Step 1 :251/ 99 Thank you God!!! Old graduate. Used kaplan 2001 notes, online qbank, Goljan audios and his Rapid Review. Only Micro & Behavior from FA. Went over the whole FA once only b/c I had a partner. Otherwise I never felt comfortable with the book. Stuck to my own notes that I made from Kaplan books I want to thank my husband, he was my rock through it all. It would never have been possible without his support.I am thankful to so many people on this forum.I think there are so many inspiring stories to be found here. I gained both knowledege and courage whenever I visited. I think its possible. If I can do it everyone can, Goodluck guys.
