With all my respect, I do not want to insult anyone, but stop lying, I am really happy to be enjoying this forum, but since all that people started saying that they get 99% or 97%, I started to believe that this forum is a jock, You know what if you get 75 % in your test you will get my respect and the respect from everybody, no body ask for your score when you are done, when you are working as a doctor, HOW CAN THE GUYS THAT SAY THAT THEY GET A 99 WILL PROVE THAT TO ME OR TO THE FORUM THAT YOU ALL GET THAT GRADE.

Remmember you all get my respect if the true is 75%.I bet to anyone that none of this guys get 99%. I BET YOU!!!!!!!!

Just say the true, look to any guy who say that get a 99%, my esect is not for you man the true is that you are a lie, and if you rae lying you are a bad doctor because you are lying to yu medical comunity.

I work in a Hospital, and when I started to saying hat some of you get 99% they satrted lauhing about me, they say man yo are talkng to NASA people.

I believe that is there smart people but not all of US.
Sorry for my bad comment, but I stop written to this forum before because of these smarttttttttt people, now I came back and the same lies. Hope no one get hurt because this true.

And I have not taken the test yet, if I get a 99% I really reget what I say but you know all of you will get 995.

Hey
I have 2 friends, both IMG's who scored 97%(236), and 99%(255). Funny thing is, they are only normal guys, that studied their a*!es off, not NASA engineers. I saw their score reports with my own eyes too. It's not impossible, it just takes a heck of a lot of work.
I am not trying to refute your argument, I am just saying that I know these scores are possible from hard working everyday joe's b/c I have seen it.

well i believe some ppl do get 99s and please all of you stop calling it %, its not percentile, its a score on two point scale, if u get 55-65% correct, u get 75 on 2 point scale.
ok back to the original argument, i know a lot of ppl from india and paki do score in high 90s so its totally possible. but lately everyone on the forum is getting that score, seems a bit fishy.
i have said this before many times and i will say it again, not everyone needs that high of a score to get in residency, if u r aiming for int med or fam med, u can get in even with scores in high 70s and 80s, i know ppl who have got that much of scores and doing or have finished their residencies. so i personally would like to get a score that will get me a residency, thats my goal, not to get 99.
anyways ppl who r truely getting these scores, i am extremely happy for them and would like them to keep sharing their experience but also would like to hear from ppl who r not scoring this high but still doing well

hey rubensssss, no need for hostility here! while i'm sure there are people out there who for some idiotic reason or another lie about their scores, i sincerely do not believe that is going on here, at least among our core members. as evidenced from posts over time, these people have worked long and hard and put in the blood, sweat, and tears to get their scores. not everyone who puts in all this effort will get scores in the high 90s, but i do believe it when these people reap what they sow. like someone else said, there is most likely a huge selection bias when considering the scores of the people on these forums--people who obsess over this test and even go as far as to spend their free hours cruising forums are probably going to comprise a larger percentage of the ones who do a little better. unfortunately, this sometimes means that the people who don't score in the high 90s end up not posting their scores at all. however, there are more than a fair share of "average" scores posted here, as well, which are just as great of an accomplishment. different scores mean different things to different people--in other words, a 75 from one person is a triumph like a 99 for another. some of the most inspiring stories i've read come from people who score in the 80s! who cares if some other person gets a 99 if he's a crappy person? the score holds individual and personal meaning (beyond that pesky "residency" thing grin)

i can't say i don't understand your feelings, though, bc i feel the same way about the sdn forums. there, it seems like everyone broke 260. no kidding. and a BIG part of me wanted to post there and lie about my score so i could tell off this one guy who keeps accusing everyone who disagrees with him of being jealous. ugh. people like him drive me CRAZY!

p.s. dxtxpx, do you happen to know what a good score range for a competitive (west coast) residency in em would be?

It could be true I really don't know, I just say I just start to get into the forum and seems that everyone is getting 99, please this test is hard is not a quizz. The score does not seems to match check some guys who gets 99 and 98 two digit but look the differency on three digit.

I could be a commercial, hopefully not.

i think different tests for whatever reasons have different 2 digit scores. like i've seen 244/99 and 98, and even an 249/98. probably matches up with standard deviations somehow--it seems like 1 SD always corresponds to a 97.

first of all the average for this test is 88/200, and that's what most people get, (at least american students.. it's hardr for img's, but this sight has both types i think) Also, which is very important.. review books are getting BETTER and due to this forum many people know what's good and what's not... I.E. Kaplan qbank, Gljan audio, etc are making review much easier.... The one pattern i do see is that everyone who got a high score tends to only use one source (like kaplan series, or individual subject books).. If I were to lie about my test score, I would post that I read everything from everywhere and make a long list of impossible things... Also, I am going through my FIRST reading of kaplan, and I am pretty sure after 4 readings (like someone else who got 98 said) I will have the same confidence... WHile i do agree with you that everyone on here is getting 90 or above i think there are three main reasons..

1) The people who are failing/low scores are not posting their results

2) The test is not THAT hard ('mon avg score is 200!!! so scoring 1sd above the mean is not a miracle)

3) Review courses are MUCH more focused, and representative of the USMLE.... And there are so many places to get opinions as to which are the best and why, you don't have to waste time reading stupid things....

i usually look at it this way: 1) a large number of those who scored low either didn't post their scores at this forum, or was never an active participant (so how the hell will we ever know about the 70 statistics?) 2) those who were active in the forum and scored high 90s were the ones who were already posting messages in the first place, so naturally everyone expects them to post their scores!

i am just inspired by these people. it drives me to work harder. i am a very lazy person when it comes to studying and my roommates during med school can attest to that. but reading these posts about people who put sweat and blood to get the score they wanted and get it, pushes me to do the same. i still slack a lot, but hey, everytime i visit the forum it gives me a little scolding that "i'm not there yet" which is good. this forum is just telling me work work work your ass, you'll get it! and those scores are a sweet reminder of the gold in the end.

Very very confrontational and incendiary post there. Are you really so convinced we are all liars or are you just trying to elicit an argument on this forum? Or are you just letting off steam and having fun at our expense? You have succeeded in getting a lively thread going.

At any rate, excuse me if I am a little miffed by your post, but I worked my tail off for my 98, thank you very much. Look, it is up to you to believe what we say or not. If we are all blowing hot air, then you can ignore our recomendations and advice. That is your choice. According to my score report, the mean for the test is 217, and the SD is 23 (for first time US and Canadian student test takers). So my score of 98/243 is a little bit over one SD above the mean, which we all know is ~ 83-84 percentile. That means two things. 1) 16% of first time US and Canadian test takers scored better than me, and 2) that means that there will be a lot of people getting such high scores, so maybe my score isn't so high after all.

I agree with what everyone says, the people who post their scores are mostly going to be people who did quite well. I had to say, I was wondering what I would do if I didn't score as well as I did. Since I had been blabbering so much on the forum, what would I do if I did just average or even just passed? I thought maybe I would just disapear. But then I decided that I would post anyway, because I think it's a shame that there aren't more exam experiences out there from people getting 80 something. Those experiences are equally important! Hey, I am honestly still in shock at how I could get a 98. I never imagined I would get such a score, nor did I expect it.

I gain nothing now by spending as much time as I do reading and responding to this forum. I didn't have to write such a long experience. Why did I do it? Because one month ago, I was you. I was the extremely nervous doc trying to study for a test that just seemed so daunting. I didn't know about this site until 1 week before my test. All that time I was in the dark. This site only works because people who have passed, who know their scores come back and share what we have learned. The USMLE is a game. It doesn't mean if you score well you are a great doc, or if you do poorly you are a bad one. It is just another hurdle we all have to surmount. But now I digress .....

Goodness, Nuprin I just checked out SDN (never heard of it before you mentioned it), and it is awful! So much bickering, so useless. I always knew this forum was great, but didn't realize how great. Please, let's not let this forum turn into SDN with more threads of this tone .... Let's be constructive!

you know, retroviridae, i think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Hey rubensss I remember you!! You had a problem with your ID and couldn't take your test on May. Have you solved it? I hope you did. I took my test on May and I did pretty well. I am sure you are gonna do great don't worry. Look I think most of the scores posted here are true, actually if you have the chance to visit SDN-gringo forum you are gonna see the top scores posted there. Anyway there is a small but considerable area under the bell curve of scores that range over 99 (244-270) of course almost all of us including retroviridae are on the other side of the curve.
Anyway good luck and I hope you do very well.

I agree with nuprin and retroviridae.
As un-evidence based as it is, i too believe that the selection bias for people posting their experience is truly great.
Those who post their experiences are usually those who benefited from this forum during the run-up to their exams. For some it provides a place to clear up some misconceptions on questions. For others it provides emotional support, for those attempting the exam on their own this is invaluable.
As retroviridae pointed out, those of us who have completed our step 1 and passed (whatever our score) gain little if not nothing by visiting this forum. But i think i speak for many others, when i say i return and participate in this forum as i am indebted to this forum and its participants.
If there are some who are lying on these forums for the little attention they get, i say let them be. I don't think that those on the forum are that foolish to be led astray be an errant few.

I found this forum early this month and put daily visit in my study schedule because I believe all these putting hearts and souls in it will reap what they sow. From reading previous postings I got the HY materials and lots of encouragements. I don't think this forum is for samrt people only, but I do believe it belongs to serious and hardworking learners like me. Read through the notes from nuprin, namf, mash......I see beautiful minds as well as how they dig it in each subjects. Best wishes to this forum and let's keep the juice.

hello friends,

i basically have little interest in dicussion forum, usually i dont like discussions. but after joining in prep4usmle, i get good emotional support from forum members, their experiences had helped me a lot in acheiving good score.

preparation for step 1 is too frustrating, i took 6 months more for reaching my exam, this forum gave me confidence and support. this forum is very very constructive, supportive and knowledgeful. i am week in behavioural science, i started to read all posts on this forum, i got star or higher performence in behaviroural scinece in my score report. thats is the main reason that i shared my experiece with other, otherwise why should i waste time on posting messages.

rubness, if you get good score, it is a natural tendency to share that happyness with others, eventhough they are assumed friends or virtual friends, my personel opinion is that nobody as a doctor can cross inner sense of wrong.

do you want to prove that those who are getting above 90 score. i am from india, here many people are getting above 90 score. as a IMG we work hard here to clear exam, we know what consequences if we get score below 80. i hope nobody got offended with this message.

these forums are just for getting for support, but dont rely completly on this forum, rubnesss,

final word, nobody likes to have false happyness.,

My concern is that everyone is getting 99,It make the test very easy or people who do not pass are very confuse.Believe me guys, no one believes me in the hospital that to many people could get 99,98.97.
I am not saying that in the test no one could get 99, what I am talking about is too many people; You all know that if these all people is getting 99 that means that the test is very easy, and I heard that every day the test is getting very complicated.

Toroloco yes finally I will take my test on Aug 3 04.

This is just respondant bias. When there are 20 people here say that they get 99, there are perhaps 2000 people visit this forum and have taken test, just they won't post unless they get high score... Again, you only see the numerator which is the number of people get 99, you never know what exactly the denominator is.

  #18

sad sad sad
Rubensss,

Your attitude is very very inappropriate for this forum. Unlike you, many of us arent looking at the scores what people got but rather how much effort they have put into studying and whether they have reached their goal. :| I know a minimum of 8 IMG's (all indians or from Middle East)personally who have scored 95 or better on their exam. They all work much harder and longer than US grads...just cuz they have spent so much money and time investing into a dream of coming to America. (including my own husband)

We are all in here for the encouragement and support that we need during these days of studying. <:flag:> If u do not believe these people and u want to continue to bicker  about nonsense like this, you are more than welcome to leave this forum. We believe in ourselves and each other. We believe that the advice we give each other will help the other. That is what matters.

You read what nuprin, retroviridae, xeroorex and angie wrote. I agree totally with them.

If u notice, many people who write their experiences have never written in the forum before, but because of the help they got from reading others' experiences, they write in hope that someone else will benefit from theirs. And they are all anonymous!! Why would someone waste their time doing that. Does that make sense? :?: Especially if they are lying. And they never return either!!Why would they lie? And even if so, WHO CARES!!! It is just encouraging the rest of us to push forward.

Personallly, i tried a lot of forums. I never got the positive attitude and encouragement anywhere else...I come to this forum every single day before and after i study just for motivation. So please, I'm sorry to say this but  do not continue if u do not wish to continue this positiveness here. Regarding the people at ur hospital, u better think twice whether its worth talking and working with people who doubt excellent achievement.

I'm sorry i'm pregnant and my hormones are raging...especially after reading ur message  . If my message was to confrontational i am sorry but u have made blind conclusions!
