25 year old male patient comes in with a fever of 102, cough, and chills. By what mechanism does IL-1 Act?

a) It indirectly leads to vasoconstriction

b) It has a direct affect on the temperature center in the thalamus

c) It increases secretion of TNF-A, which produces fever

d) It directly increases vascular permeability.

Misread the question, thought it said hypothalamus

IL-1 acts on the hypothalamus to increase secretion of prostaglandins (E subtype) which change the set point for thermoregulation, the question becomes whether or not this is a direct effect or indirect through prostaglandins production. I would say direct effect as when IL-1 is released in high enough quantities it enters the circulation to physically interact with the hypothalamus and exert its effects.

as for c. my understanding is that while TNF-A does have pyrogenic effects it induces macrophages to secrete IL-1, not the other way around

i totally go along with Ahab.

i think there is one option missing and that is "increased prostaglandinds". i would go for that

there is an answer cuz I made up this question so that I wouldn't forget this mechanism....

"IL 1 and TNF intereact with vascular receptors in the thermorefulatory centers of the hyupothalamus, inducing local prostagladin E2 production, resulting in sympathetic nerve stimulation, vasoconstriction of skin vessels, and fever"

Direct quote from pocket Robbins page 57...

adeelmd, u r right dat 'IL 1 and TNF intereact with vascular receptors in the thermorefulatory centers of the hyupothalamus, inducing local prostagladin E2 production'
PGE2 raises the thermostatic set pt in hypothalamus
To increase the temp(body needs to conserve energy)
vasoconstriction of skin vs-->dec loss of heat thru skin
shivering--->inc heat prodn(increased activity)
