rdsa2, I took the course here in the US, and got the notes that way... but in India, I know Kaplan offers their course in Bangalore for some really expensive amount of money (I want to say Rs50,000, but I could be wrong). It should be elsewhere in India too. What most of my classmates did was try to get an old copy from a senior. I think if it is fairly recent edition (I used the 2002 one) it should be fine. No need to take the course unless you feel it will help motivate you to study. Otherwise it is like med school where you go to lecture, and then if you don't study on your own, you don't know anything.

retrovirdae ! thanks a lot for replying ! im a in a bizarre situation, in medical school i did not study anat or bio chem or path nor pharmo seriously, i can say im nil in all those subjects i have to start from down under again , now i want to take step 1 how long do you think it will take to prepare considering my current knowledge situation ? and which authors book is good for first Aid ? and do i need to gulp the whole of books like grays anatomy ,guytons , goodman gillman to appear this exam and get good score ?

and regarding your project with hiv are you anywhere close finding a vaccine to hiv ?

thanks lot sincerely,
rdsa

Well, yuo must have learned something about those subjects in med school. So I would say, try looking at Kaplan notes if you can find one and see if it makes sense to you. If you can't find Kaplan notes, BRS and High Yield are a good series to read. If you find you can't make sense of the subjects from those books (after all they are review books) then you can go back and read any of the proper texts on the subjects. But if you try to do that, it will take you a very long time to prepare. As for the vaccine, I am not too optimistic. If HIV were a disease of mice, we would have it licked! But what works in mice doesn't seem to work in primates.

its really sad that mices r in better postion than human as fr as hiv is concerned but one baffling thing about viruses are that we dont have any exact cure for even simple daily cold viruses .and onemore thing which authors book for firstaid we get in india that is good enough ?

thanks grin

rdsa3 First Aid for the USMLE Step I by Bhushan and Lee. It comes out yearly. I used an older 2001 edition. It really doesn't need to be the latest edition. But you should be able to find the most recent one at any medical bookseller in India.

cookie: With only 20 days left, I assume you have been studying all along? I would start doing lots of questions, Kaplan Qbank, and maybe the NBME exam, to see what your approximate score would be. If you are close to your goals, perhaps try reading your study materail one more time. I would not recomend starting something new at this point, except perhaps First Aid. Hope this helps!

retroviridiae - when you and everyone else talks about kaplan review books - for example, the oft-repeated statement that "kaplan anatomy is more than enough" - which set of books are they referring to? is it the subject volumes (the set of around 8) or the two large general principles and systems volumes? and is there a place where people sell used ones on this site? i haven't been able to find one.

thanks!

I don't think there is a place on this website to buy used Kaplan notes, but I am talking about the subject books that come with the course, not the system specific books they have.

Hi Folks This is my first link of correspondence in this group. But guess what more than anything to offer, I have a bunch of questions. Will get to a stage one day where I will be useful ) . Any way in the first para I describe my condition and in the later I throw a bunch of questions. I would appreciate any kind of advice and recommendations.
First of all, I am a medical graduate from Mysore, graduated in the year 2000. Following this I worked at an NGO and pursued to do MPH with Epidemiology (EPI)majors. Following this I started working as Non-tenure Faculty at a university here in US and do my research work. All during the time from completion of my MBBS till I started working I continued to think that I will be an EPI researcher. But folks priorities have changed and I decide to do USMLE get into clinical practice and do research in the field of medicine than just EPI. I started looking at the chain of discussions in various fourms and realized that Kaplan is the source for studying for this exam. I got hold of Kaplan notes for Step 1 and 2 and started my studies in a very haphazard fashion. Being out of touch with these subjects was giving me jitters. However I organized for about a month and completed my application for Step 1 with the eligibility period starting this June through August. I have studied the subjects Physiology, Micro, Patho, and Biochem, only once till now. And there is another family committment that I need to attend in Aug - so will definately loose some time for that. I am thinking on requesting an extension of eligibility period and try taking test in somewhere in Dec. But I realize that I can request the extension to just the next contiguous period so it will be Sep-Nov.
Now my questions Realizing the fact that I have been out of touch with Medicine for more than 4 - 5 yrs, what will be a good conisderation either cancel the exam loose some dollars or should I just reschedule the exam. Also there so many out there who have mentioned that they were out of touch with Medicine for few years and then got back took exams, and also made quite a score. So based upon your individual experiences what time it generally takes to prepare and do well. Also remember that I currenly work full time as a researcher. Your experiences and advices will be extremely valuable for me to prepare mentally for this shift in career track that I am planning. I again really appreciate your response and guidance with this. I promise to keep the discussion busy at my end.
Pleasure to meet you all
Peaceful Regards
Jaideva )
