Hi Anno - there are different requirements for every program, so I will give you an idea of what my hospital will ask. You have to be in your final two years of medical school. We will ask for a staff physician (of our hospital) to write you a letter of recommendation. Now, I realize that this is hard for IMG students, being that you don't know anyone at most of the hospitals, etc., but this is what the student clerkship coordinator will ask for her. Sometimes it works if one of the residents will vouch for you. A large thing that the staff/resident who will recommend you for an elective will be to judge your English language skills. It has a lot to do with communication with the patients - if the doctor and patient can't communicate with each other - it's not a good thing. Sorry that I took so long with an answer!

I have never heard that term before. Exchange seems to indicate that we would send someone to your home school or institution.

Well yes that is the way it is done here in Europe.I know a lot of people that did that but in Europian countries , i know no one that went to the States , so it must be very hard to do that. So for doing elective the most important thing for this would be (beside the excelent knowledge of english) to know a doctor from us hospital i want to go to or know a doctor from my country who have good connections with us doctors.Am i right bbb?

I haven't heard of a student paying tuition to do rotations at hospital. I'll ask around with some of my residents and see if they have heard of this happening. :?:
